Agricultural
Advisory Services Since
its inception in the year 2002, EVEL has had a good reputation
and experience in the area of organic vanilla production. However,
emphasis is also accorded to other organic spices like Cardamom
and mushrooms. Farmers are usually facilitated to form groups
and identify their needs regarding the agronomy of vanilla and
other spices. Training has been on for the last two years, with
an intention of ensuring increased production in terms of quality
and quantity.
Farmers'
training is conducted on the following aspects of vanilla production:
|
|
- General
crop production and management of the vanilla plant
- Pests
and disease control
- Simple
form records management.
- Natural/organic
manure application and management
- Field
demonstration/model farms to expose farmers to realize good
vanilla production
- Integration
of organic vanilla production with other supplementary farm
activities
- Marketing
of the vanilla crop
- Marketing

- Farmers
are trained on the aspect of good quality production in
order to attract good market
- Farmers
are trained about collective/group marketing of their produce
(vanilla) as a means of controlling local price fluctuations,
increasing their savings, rising their bargaining power
and maintaining the quality of vanilla. Only ripe mature
beans/pods are harvested and sold at a reasonable price
- Marketing
information is availed to our farmers to know the local
and international prices. The aspect of collective marketing
is also emphasized to avoid exploitation by the middlemen
- Farmers
have also been advised on bulk production as a result of
collective marketing. This also enables the farmers to attract
bigger markets

Exporting
Organic Spices Since
its inception in the year 2002, this organization has embarked
on the mobilization and training of farmers in organic production
of species. At present, this organization is looking at starting
up the export business of cured organic vanilla. This has been
boosted by the increase in the production capacity in terms
of quality and quantity. Ground work(training and mobilization)
carried out so far is expected to give rise in yields for the
June-July 2005 harvest. Therefore EVEL has forecasted a substantial
harvest of 90 tonnes of green organic vanilla pods(15 tonnes
of cured beans) in the June-July harvest. We wish to start our
export business with this harvest. |
